Webmasters Time and Lists
I’m a bit skeptical of all those get rich blogs and books that makes it sound like once you create a website you can put it on autopilot and watch the money roll in. Nah! Even the ones I admire (Joel Comm) will at times paint a picture of easy money. I just read his book entitled “Kaching” and at times he makes it sound too easy. What Joel is forgetting, he is plugging his sites via writing the book, so in one way or another, a webmaster is spending their time directly or indirectly plugging and maintaining their site.
I don’t want to do the opposite and paint a picture that your life has to be consumed by your webmaster duties, but all in all, expect to put in the time and effort to make your site a success.
What does a webmaster spend his time doing? Lets see:
- Research and reading
- Maintaining and tweaking the site
- Customer service – including all those emails
- Brainstorming
- Marketing
- Crisis duty
My time is never a consistent steady flow, but more like one minute I seem to have a ton of things to do and then there are times when things are relatively quiet and slow. Granted, I can be lazy and do nothing, but that is pretty much the kiss of death for a site. As I write this, I’m brainstorming and researching a new idea for a website. When I’m involved with a new project, there never seems to be enough time.
For me, marketing is by far the most time consuming and tedious work. Dare I say it — I hate marketing. Yikes, I probably just killed my site’s existence. But man, unless you have tons of money to throw at something like adwords, TV, etc, marketing can be a real challenge if you are on a shoe string budget. I’m kinda of in-between. I got some extra money I can throw at adwords, but I’m always searching for other ways to network/market my sites as cheaply as I can.
All in all, a webmaster needs to put in the time to make a site a success. If he is like me, he will have a daily list and a long term goal list of things to do. For example, today on my list I told myself, I need to write something in my blog. So here I am, writing.
Ok back to some other duties on my list, but I may just take a break before I tackling the next thing — ugh — its adwords.
Cheers
Dan
